Lokel aims to enhance the adoption and impact of Climate-Smart Agriculture by advocating for increased funding for the sector. This ensures that financial resources are commensurate with the sector's significance.
Despite accounting for one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions, agrifood systems only receive 4% of climate finance, with just a fifth allocated to smallholders.
Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) is an integrated approach to managing landscapes—cropland, livestock, forests, and fisheries--that addresses the interlinked challenges of food security and climate change.
CSA includes various practices and technologies such as using climate-resilient crop varieties, conservation agriculture, agroforestry, precision farming, water management, and improved livestock management.
"By adopting these practices, we can accomplish:"
1. Increased productivity: Produce more and higher quality food without placing additional strain on natural resources.
2. Enhance resilience: Reduce vulnerability to droughts, pests, diseases, and other climate-related risks and shocks. Improve capacity to adapt and grow in the face of increased seasonal variability and erratic weather patterns.
3. Reduced emissions: Reduce greenhouse gas emissions of the food system and increase the carbon sequestration of plants and soils.
